The Tonna dolium, commonly known as the spotted tun, is a remarkable marine gastropod belonging to the family Tonnidae, often referred to as tun shells. Its distinctive features make it a subject of interest among marine enthusiasts and collectors.
Physical Description
Tonna dolium shells typically range from 100 mm (4.0") to 181 mm (7.1") in height.
The shell shape is an ovate globe with a generally short spire. The shell surface is characterized by wide and distant ribs with a white to grayish base color, sometimes tinged with rose. The ribs are adorned with alternating white and red or orange spots, creating a visually striking pattern.
Tonna dolium is found throughout the Indo-West Pacific, including regions off Tanzania, the Mascarene Basin, and the Philippines.
