A stunning tropical shell displayed on a handmade glossy black stand with a brass plaque engraved with the Latin name for the species that called this shell its home.
The Turbo sarmaticus, commonly known as the South African Turban, Giant Turban, Alikreukel, or Ollycrock, is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Turbinidae. This species is notable to collectors for its distinctive shell pattern.
The South African Turban is highly prized for its unique coloration and intricate patterns. When polished, the shell reveals a stunning array of colors, making it a sought-after item for collectors and decorators. These shells are often used in coastal-themed décor, either as standalone pieces or grouped in displays.
Shell Description
The exterior displays a soft brown hue with flame-shaped patterns above and banded white areas below.
Beneath the shell's dull brownish exterior lies a vibrant orange-red layer, followed by a stratum of intense black, and finally the pearly interior. Polishing the shell reveals these richly colored layers making it highly sought after for decorative purposes.
Turbo sarmaticus is native to South Africa, predominantly found along its southern coastline.
